CALLUM O'REILLY b. 1996
ECKLONIA composed 2025

Program note:

“Ecklonia is a species of Kelp, which is a kind of brown Algae (Seaweed). Until I met my marine biologist partner Antoine, I'm embarrassed to say that it never occurred to me how seaweed might grow and where it comes from. I find Kelp beautiful to look at with its golden-brown tone as it waves and flutters in the currents. Kelp forests are home to thousands of species, including hundreds of species of fish, plus numerous molluscs, crustaceans, sea urchins, sea stars, and sponges. These forests to me resemble peaceful kingdoms, with the kelp being the castles and buildings. I decided to write a piece which reflects the tranquillity of these forests on a calm day. Musically, I wanted to write a piece which reflects the dreamy feels of the “shoegaze” genre, particularly the music of Cocteau Twins and Julee Cruise.”

HOPSCOTCH composed 2025

Program note:

“When writing a piece for the Hush Foundation, I was particularly interested in creating something for children in hospitals. I thought a lot about the kinds of things that would have cheered me up as a kid and tried to capture that mood in this piece, which I have titled Hopscotch, after the traditional children’s game. I remember, as a child, having to stay home when I was sick and still needing some sort of excitement to help me feel at ease, whether it was cartoons, video games, or adventure books. For this reason, this piece is not “soothing” in the typical sense. Instead, it presents a childlike innocence that I believe a younger version of myself would have enjoyed.

Hopscotch is supposedly an ancient game played all over the world by children and is known by many different names. It is Laylay in Persia, Peevers in Scotland, Marelle in France, Kith-Kith in India, Engklek in Indonesia, and Tumatu in Ghana.”

Callum O'Reilly is a composer and multimedia artist. He enjoys pushing traditional conventions and contorting the limits of the classical ensemble. Callum incorporates elements of electronic music, hip-hop, pop, and modern jazz, creating sonic worlds that are original and deeply embedded in modern culture, while also murmuring the classical musical legacy of the past.

His work has been performed and commissioned by numerous ensembles, including the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, Mix’t Trio, Perth Symphony Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra, ANAM, Willoughby Symphony Orchestra Omega Ensemble and Ensemble Offspring. Callum is also an accomplished sound installation artist, with projects showcased internationally, including in Fujiyoshida, Japan. Most recently, he completed a studio residency at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in 2024, where they created his first “Dream Room” – a multi-sensory interactive music experience.
