2020 COMPOSER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

  • LEE BRADSHAW 1977-

Images for String Quartet (composed 2019)

Live-streamed November 2020 by 5stream at Glenfern, East St Kilda, and presented in association with Team of Pianists and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

We weren’t surprised to learn that in addition to his extensive experience as a record producer, Lee also has an intense love of the string quartet. Equally versed in the string quartets of Beethoven as Bartok and with a love of Schoenbergian harmonies, as a result of his participation in this residency, Lee has gone on to embed himself in Australia’s chamber music scene with commissions from Musica Viva, Wilma and Friends to name a few.

  • SCOTT COPEMAN 1977-

    The Tree Project (composed 2020)

Live-streamed November 2020 by 5stream at Glenfern, East St Kilda, and presented in association with Team of Pianists and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria)

A gorgeously hypnotic and stunningly beautiful piece, we sent Scott to Tasmania to keep on writing. He has a real innate musicianship and a sixth sense for string writing. (We didn’t think cellists could play tenths but we were wrong!)

  • THOMAS MISSON 1992-

    Hijack (composed 2020)

Live-streamed November 2020 by 5stream at Glenfern, East St Kilda, and presented in association with Team of Pianists and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

As Pachelbel’s canon is ‘Hijacked’ in the most inventive and fun way, we relished the chance to play quarter tones, which can actually sound rather beautiful. The canon is easy to spot, and its deconstruction quite delightful to witness.

Live-streamed November 2020 by 5stream at Glenfern, East St Kilda, and presented in association with Team of Pianists and the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

A rhythmical jigsaw puzzle, Helen’s use of texture and interplay made this piece so much fun to perform.
