String Quartet Op. 131 in C# minor (composed 1826)PROGRAM NOTES
Filmed December 2021 in the Primrose Potter Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre
Revered by Schubert, loved by string players, and inspiration for countless composers, this quartet was the inspiration behind the 2012 film “A Late Quartet”. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132Filmed December 2020 at fortyfivedownstairs, Melbourne
The stunning fortyfivedownstairs has always felt like a second home, so it was a real treat to play one of the greatest pieces of all time in this magnificent space. The middle movement “Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian mode” was exactly what we needed after the year that was 2020.

MARGARET SUTHERLAND (1897-1984)
Quartet for cor anglais and strings
Filmed 14 March 2021 at Villa Alba Museum, Kew by 5stream
The piece that convinced Flinders Quartet to record all of her chamber works for string quartet, Margaret shows off her sensitivities, humour and craftsmanship. String Quartet No. 3 (composed 1967)
Filmed 14 March 2021 at Villa Alba Museum, Kew by 5stream
Margaret’s music is characterised by a razor-sharp intelligence and wit and her string quartet No. 3 encapsulates much of her life’s work. Representing one of only two commissions she ever received in her lifetime, we can hear the influence of Debussy’s harmonies, Bartok’s rhythmical interplay and the sonorities of Hindemith.

IAIN GRANDAGE (1970-) after FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847)
"Puck's Dream (after Midsummer)" (composed 2018 / 1826)
Filmed 26 July 2018 at Hawthorn Town Hall by 5stream
We’ve always thought that if the mischievous Puck played an instrument, it would be the viola. Iain Grandage and Richard Piper created this masterpiece intertwining Mendelssohn’s music with Grandage’s original work and weaving the magic of Shakespeare throughout. In an incredible performance, Chris absolutely shone and was even approached by Melbourne Theatre Company following this performance to continue his newfound acting skills.
