  • MARGARET SUTHERLAND (1897-1984)
String Quartet No. 1 (composed 1937)

Filmed 14 March 2021 at Villa Alba Museum, Kew by 5stream

Written in four movements and composed in 1937, this delightfully accessible piece has two incredible inner movements. The soulful melodies with aching harmonic structure in the second, followed by a Kurt Weillesque scherzo.

    WILMA SMITH, violin
    WENHONG LUO, guest viola

  • MARGARET SUTHERLAND (1897-1984)
Quartet for cor anglais and strings

Filmed 14 March 2021 at Villa Alba Museum, Kew by 5stream

The piece that convinced Flinders Quartet to record all of her chamber works for string quartet, Margaret shows off her sensitivities, humour and craftsmanship. One of only a handful of chamber works for Cor Anglais, Ben Opie’s performance glows with the sonority of this often neglected instrument.

  • MARGARET SUTHERLAND (1897-1984)
String Quartet No. 3 (composed 1967)

Filmed 14 March 2021 at Villa Alba Museum, Kew by 5stream

Margaret’s music is characterised by a razor-sharp intelligence and wit and her string quartet No. 3 encapsulates much of her life’s work. Representing one of only two commissions she ever received in her lifetime, we can hear the influence of Debussy’s harmonies, Bartok’s rhythmical interplay and the sonorities of Hindemith.

  • LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132

Filmed December 2020 at fortyfivedownstairs, Melbourne

The stunning fortyfivedownstairs has always felt like a second home, so it was a real treat to play one of the greatest pieces of all time in this magnificent space. The middle movement “Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian mode” was exactly what we needed after the year that was 2020.

Commissioned by dear friend and ardent concert goer/music lover Richard Gubbins, this setting to music of Leunig's iconic work is heartbreakingly poignant. Delivered with wit, sensitivity and grace by Chris Moore, this performance lives on in our memories.

    "Puck's Dream (after Midsummer)" (composed 2018 / 1826)

Filmed 26 July 2018 at Hawthorn Town Hall by 5stream

We’ve always thought that if the mischievous Puck played an instrument, it would be the viola. Iain Grandage and Richard Piper created this masterpiece intertwining Mendelssohn’s music with Grandage’s original work and weaving the magic of Shakespeare throughout. In an incredible performance, Chris absolutely shone and was even approached by Melbourne Theatre Company following this performance to continue his newfound acting skills.

Commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre and Melbourne University, Tom managed to create a whole new world and landscape of sound for the string quartet. The piece pairs sounds in the most ingenious way. “Scenes from a Poet's Life” was recorded as part of an ABC Classics release, paired with Sculthorpe’s 18th string quartet and Elena Kats-Chernin’s piano quintet, “The Offering”.
